Join Chicago Mountaineering Club at Devil's Lake for our annual Old Timers / New Climbers Picnic. We will be climbing both Saturday and Sunday, but Saturday afternoon the CMC will be providing Burgers, Hotdogs and sweet corn for our big summer social gathering. This is a pot-luck style picnic so please bring a side to share, your own dinnerware, and beverages. The $20 registration fee for non-members covers camping fees for the entire weekend (Fri.- Sat. nights). Climbing/Picnic no charge.

NOTE: CMC may cancel public outings and refund all paying registrants no later than 1 week before the scheduled event if we are not able to confirm Rope Leaders will be present. Please make sure to check your email before leaving, if an outing is cancelled the campground will be closed to the public for that weekend.
These outings are open to all, but require registration. Join us at our private campground just outside Devil’s Lake State Park. Camping is open to anyone climbing with the club (waiver required!) and costs only $20/person for the whole weekend. Many people arrive on Friday evening, but some do come up early Saturday morning (please arrive by 8:30am to make the morning meeting).
A typical CMC outing at Devil’s Lake is a gathering of both members and non-members. Everyone meets at the campsite at 8:30 AM for the morning meeting which covers the inherent risks of outdoor climbing, and any other club business. This is followed by an introduction of the Rope Leaders, and announcements about where the day’s climbing parties will be headed. Everyone will then drive over to the parking lot nearest to the climb and hike up to the bluffs. Multiple top-ropes are usually fixed based on the number of people climbing - there are no bolted sport routes at Devil’s Lake SP. Rope Leaders will review all top-rope anchors, and then the climbing begins! It is not unusual to have 6-10 ropes setup for each party. Bring your own harness, shoes, water, and food for the day.
***If you are applying to become a member of the CMC, note the date of the outing you attend and the name of the Rope Leader you climb with. Enter this information on your application (when you get home) which requires three outings total. You will also need two CMC members to sponsor you, so don't be shy; make friends! It's easy. ***
